Watoya is a small old house built in the Taisho era (1912-1926) in the small village of Otaki, Isumi County, Chiba Prefecture, and is located on the highest hill overlooking the village. In front of the house are terraced fields that used to be terraced rice paddies, and on a clear day, one can see Mt.Fuji.
Today, it is only an hour and a half drive from central Tokyo, but before the Aqua-line came through, it was truly an isolated island on land.
Because of that, however, there are many places where abundant nature is still untouched.
Watoya is a secret base quietly nestled in the midst of such an environment.
The rice paddies where the rice is grown are filled with spring water from two sources and have a small waterfall with a clear stream running right next to it. It is a place where the word “playable rice paddies” fits perfectly.
Although the style of operation is a guesthouse, Watoya is a farmer’s inn with a simplified lodging system on application to the public health department. That is why Kazu, the manager, lives here.
Of course, the place where Kazu sleeps is different, but guests basically share a room with other guests, and the relaxing space, eating space, bath, toilet, and washing machine are shared with Kazu and his staff.
So, please feel as if you are visiting Kazu’s home in the countryside (hometown).
Otaki, Isumi County, Chiba Prefecture, is designated as a depopulated area.
While the town is known to railroad fans for its Isumi and Kominato Railway, it is the kind of town that has posters with the catchphrase, “There is nothing here but here”.
But Otaki, once a castle town, still retains its old townscape, a beautiful river with fish swimming in the mountains, and hot springs in a landscape of waterfalls. I feel that many things can be done here, and I see a lot of potential.
